“Imitate God, therefore, in everything you do, because you are his dear children. Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.” Ephesians 5:1-2 NLT
How are we as Christians meant to imitate God and follow the example of Christ? That little word, ‘therefore,’ refers us to the previous chapter that is all about unity and living as children of light! It talks of letting the Spirit renew our thoughts and attitudes, of throwing off our old sinful nature and putting on our new nature – created to be like God, truly righteous and holy. It explicitly tells us of certain behaviours that we need to get rid of: lying, anger that controls us, stealing, and using foul and abusive language. Instead we’re to be kind to each other, tenderhearted and forgiving one another just as God, through Christ has forgiven us. Without the Spirit of God this is all pretty much impossible, but with Him, knowing our identity as His children, we are able to follow the example of Jesus, and it’s this counter-cultural way of living that becomes such a powerful message to a world that is full of hate and fury. Lord, I want to be more like You! I don’t expect it to be easy but help me to live a life filled with love this week. May I be alert to your leading and ready with the right words at the right time, recognising that people are watching to see the difference having faith in You makes! Use me to impact at least one other person with the light of Your Gospel I pray. Amen 👆🏼🙏🏼❤️
